Will Your Life Fit? A Smarter Garage Check for Okanagan Home Buyers

A garage can look spacious in listing photos and still fail the real test: your vehicle, bikes, winter tires, tools and everyday gear all fitting safely together.

Before a showing, turn the garage from an afterthought into a practical fit check. A photo and a real list of what you own can help you build a planning concept—then measurements and property rules tell you whether it will actually work.

52-second video: Rico demonstrates a representative AI garage-layout concept. Direct MP4 link.

Concept only—not a listing or measurement guarantee. The garage visuals in the video are representative planning concepts. They do not depict a specific property and do not confirm dimensions, storage capacity, parking fit or permitted use.

Start with the real garage and your real gear

1 · PhotographTake clear photos from the driveway, each corner and the back wall. Include the overhead door, side door, utilities, windows, stairs and anything that limits usable wall or ceiling space.
2 · ListWrite down what must fit: vehicle dimensions, bicycles, skis or boards, winter tires, tools, bins, stroller, lawn equipment, charging equipment and any workbench.
3 · Mock upUse AI or a simple sketch to explore zones for parking, wall storage and shelving. Treat the result as a question generator—not as proof that the layout is possible.

Verify the concept at the showing

Measure what can make or break the fit

  • Usable width and depth: measure around stairs, posts, mechanical equipment and built-ins—not just wall to wall.
  • Door clearance: confirm the overhead door’s clear opening and the space needed for tracks, hinges and the open door.
  • Shelf depth: make sure storage does not block vehicle doors, the walking path, electrical panels, shutoffs or required access.
  • Parking reality: use the actual vehicle length, width and mirror clearance. Test whether passengers can get out and the garage door can close.
  • Height and overhead systems: check ceiling height, garage-door travel, lighting, sprinklers and whether racks would interfere.
  • Condo or strata rules: review bylaws and rules before adding racks, anchors, chargers, cabinetry or storing restricted items. Confirm what is common property and whether approval is required.

Use AI for layout ideas—not due diligence

AI can quickly suggest where categories of gear might go, reveal competing uses for the same wall and help you prepare better questions. It can also invent clearances, ignore door movement, draw impossible shelves or overlook fire, electrical and strata requirements.

The useful sequence is simple: visualize first, verify second. Bring a tape measure, record the numbers, compare them with your vehicle and equipment, and obtain any required professional or strata confirmation before relying on the space.
